Review 999 goes to A Rockin Ice!

Now while I'm going to give this place 4.5 stars I have to say Thom pushed the review stars up for him.

Thom is basically the nicest truck owner/operator there is. Hes goes out of his way to make people happy and enjoy his product.

    #bi...

I have a few things that would make it perfect.

I dont like the wooden spoons. Dont like the texture and they dont scoop as well as a real spoon....they do work though.

I didnt get the snow cone wrapper in the cup.

If you made it a dollar cheaper with no ice cream I would be so happy!

Regardless this is a awesome truck and they give you a ton of shaved ice.

If you see Thom say hi and tell him you saw my review on Yelp he wanted to see it when it was published.

Yes Thom this is that sour spray only gets cherry guy.

Great guys. Fun friendly vibe and some delicious flavors. More than enough to share with 3-4 friends. If you're feeling extra creative it's also byob to add a little extra 'flavor'

I've been 3 times and ill be returning again and again!

This brought me right back to Hawaii! The flavors are perfect! Not too syrupy, but very flavorful and refreshing! The portions are huge and can feed 3 people, but I eat the entire thing myself and can't wait to reach the vanilla ice cream at the bottom! You can choose up to 3 flavors and my favorite is the mango, coconut, and pineapple! Yum!!

Secondly, the owner, Thom, is a delight! He goes out of his way to give his customers what they want in a cheerful and inviting fashion! He also takes the time to get to know you! I would recommend 'Rockin Ice' to everyone who's looking for a refreshing treat!

It's shaved ice!!! I don't understand why people are complaining ....what else did u expect???
I love the energy that Thom has!!! He sells his stuff...and wants you to like it...and he'll attempt to make you happy within his ability.

$6 does sound kinda pricey.....but it's huge!!! We had 3 people..and we couldn't finish it.

Almost got a seizure from his bright flashing menu tho..haha

Great, Yummy Shaved Ice! Definately worth the $6.00 I keep going back for more.  I stumbled upon the shaved ice truck in Studio City by accident and have been hooked ever since. The flavors are delicious and the portions are MORE than GENEROUS.  Please people seriously? Quit your whining about the $6 bucks, we live in L.A. geez we stick that money in the parking meters like nothing or guzzle down a $6 dollar Starbucks without giving it a second thought.  Get a grip or maybe chill with a $6 shaved ice. I'm just a regular customer but I believe in standing up for a good company delivering great service. Keep delivering Thom and ignore all the haters Great Job and Great Ice. My husband especially loves the grape :)

The ice-cream on the bottom is a gem. Thom is super cool and he makes  you want to love the stuff, and in a hot day, you will more than love the big ass ball of flavored ice.

The ice-cream on the bottom is a gem; because by the time you reach the bottom layer of the creamy, rich ice-cream, you're already really satisfied and refreshed from the mound of shaved ice that has been ground so finely that they actually have a creamy texture.

I got the mango, vanilla and pina colada.
Make sure to drizzle tons of condensed milk on top for maximum yumminess and happiness. There's also some sweet-and-sour powder you can sprinkle on top that tastes very much like tamarind powder or the sour candy in a tube that you ate as a kid (forgot the name of that candy).

Btw, it's all for $5. Not a bad price, considering that the ice is bigger than my head. And somehow it squeezed into my tummy. I don't understand.....

Truck was right by our house last week and I was soooo excited.  I grew up spending my summers in Hawaii and they are pretty close to the real deal.  I'd love to see the ice more compacted and maybe the syrup a little thicker, that way it won't melt as fast, but wow they were yummy.

A Rockin Ice was amazing! Not only is the Hawaiian shaved ice delicious, but the entire experience of just going to the truck was a blast! I attribute this to the cool decor of the actual truck (right down to the authentic burning tiki torches) and the owner whose enthusiasm, friendly grin, and conversation skills give the whole experience of  simply getting a cooling summer snack all the better. Additionally, the selection of flavors is endless and the ice cream you find at the bottom of your shaved ice cone is creamy and to die for. Because A Rockin Ice is so good, I immediately drop everything I am doing as soon as the truck gets to my neighborhood...I absolutely cannot miss an opportunity for shaved ice! Everyone needs to try it!

A Rockin Ice is amazing! My family and I love the shave ice and Thom and the staff are the nicest people!
The servings are generous and the flavor is fabulous! We look forward to our weekly visits to the truck whether that's in Eagle Rock, Altadena, Hollywood, Arcadia, or Downtown.
On our way now to get shave ice!

Born, and raised in Hawaii (Makaha), I grew up on the KING of shaved ice; Matsumoto's in Haleiwa.  You guys got it right, the finely shaved ice, the syrup, as well as the wooden spoon. lol  So stoked to have real, authentic Hawaiian shaved ice in the Mainland.  Can't wait to try your coffee ice.  Keep the goodness coming.  Mahalo nui loa. - H. Not only will you get the BEST Shave Ice, here (including the state of Hawaii), but the service could not get any better!  I already stated A ROCKIN ICE is the BEST and I have not yet even mentioned how caring and well he works all the other business owners around him.  I make a special trip (30 miles) weekly to have a Shave Ice from A ROCKIN ICE and a sandwich from Dave's Chillin & Grillin!

Lately I've been getting some new discoveries by seeing mentions on twitter. After an early night of liquor and greasy food, I really had a craving for sweets, particularly ice cream. A Rockin Ice was going to be at a stop on my way home and it was a message from the universe. (shush... its justification). I saw they had ice cream too, as well as shaved ice. However they were only going to be there another hour.

I am going to assume you know what Hawaiian Shaved Ice is by now. If you are thinking Sno-Cone, then you may have to stalk some elementary schools and wait for that familiar sound of "Pop Goes the Weasel"

When I saw the menu, I saw a lot of the flavour syrups you will see on different food trucks or storefronts. They also have ice cream sandwiches, a few other specialty drinks. the one that caught my eye was their own "Espresso Shaved Ice"

However, I saw the prices... granted I am used to other truck prices. I didn't think $6 - 7$ for shaved ice was a bit much. (Sorry the cheap immigrant in me rises now and again). But I made the effort to discover and I wanted to try it out.

The Espresso Shaved Ice is apparently made with real espresso rather than just a syrup. So you will get the real flavor of coffee. Added at the bottom is a scoop of ice cream and they rave that at the end of the shaved ice, you wind up with your own iced coffee latte. HA!

I walked away to make a phone call. I came back and I saw TWO of the people behind the window handling what looked like the bottom ball of a snowman. It looked like a tiny snow boulder.

    WTF?

The girl slided the big white monstrosity on the holder (it was laughable that it stayed on) and she soaked the whole thing with the espresso. WOW. She transformed my little planet of Hoth into Dagobah right in front of my eyes. (Geek check on Star Wars ref). It was kind of amusing to be offered condensed milk. It became a WHY THE FUCK NOT decision.

    The thing is huge. Big.
I almost regretted not calling some chick on a pretend date just so I can get her to eat half of it. Damn. I got through a good chunk of it and started my frostbite headache. Normally I would've just tapped out. But I wanted to get to the ice cream just to see how it tasted with the shaved ice. I had to do it. Must. (Did I mention they give you some tiny ass wooden spoons? LOL)

    I felt so torn...
part shame that I ate such a big monstrosity of a dessert. Alone.
part victory that I reached the bottom to that creamy vanilla ice cream.

I would've said "see you guys again soon" but it felt like I went down on Frosty the Snowman's GF. My mouth was icey numb.

Had hit this truck up at Art Walk when the weather was just turning from that chilling but moderate cold to the "wait, now we're in Southern California again" heat and I have to say that I loved the taste of this iced treat.

Much like the Get Shaved truck, this truck does the whole Hawaiian style shaved ice right and you can expect to walk away from this truck really refreshed and chilled.

The selection of flavors they have on this truck is really huge. I saw Root Beer and I knew I had to go for it. But they have a wide selection to choose from. Just about anything you can think of they were not short in supply of trying to provide.

Now they did have an energy syrup selection that was sugar free. How that works? I have no idea. But it had Pina Colada and Strawberry as options for a buck fifty more. Which I guess if you're on a lunch break would be a welcome addition to your ability to get past that 2pm slump.

Over all, the cones are freaking huge and the ice flavors really go into high gear in and for around $5, you really can't go wrong. Especially with a hot summer coming our way, you have no reason NOT to try this truck out.

We came upon this beautifully crafted truck one afternoon and it was just hot enough that I needed an ice, and what a glorious selection of flavors!!

I bought a creamscicle which was orance with milk poured over it and a scoop of vanilla at the bottom, it was heaven to eat and hope to run into Rockin Ice truck more often...especially when I am entertaining guests, Dave being super friendly made the whole expeirence a wonderfully fun time. :-)))

We just experience A ROCKin ICE truck at the Arcadia Fair. The customer service is FUN; they even have chairs.  The best part was a rainbow of delicious flavors of shaved ice that was bigger than my kid! It took 4 of us to finish it. What a treat.  I hope we see them again. They bring a taste of Hawaii and the fun of a vacation to a local venue. LOVE, love, LOVE them!

I have had the original in Hawaii.

I LOVE the coconut! That was a kick A$$ flavor.

CON- The shaved ice portion is TOOO LARGE and thus the ice cream gets lost.

Matsumoto in North Shore, had the appropriate Ice to Ice Cream proportion!

I think that is what they have to do ... I know the like to do it BIG, but too big - I was full on ice/water before I hit the ice cream and to my the ICE CREAM WITH THE SCOOP OF ICEE is the BOMB

GREAT JOB, JUST DON'T JUMBO THEM ... let the flavors and ice cream shine

I first tried A Rockin Ice about a month ago, and despite the gigantic portions, managed to eat two.  Both the coconut and the espresso were unforgettably delightful and I've been craving another ever since.

Yesterday, I came across another place selling Hawaiian Shave Ice, so I went for it, but was so disappointed I found myself coming back here to write a good review for A Rockin Ice.  Truly one of the best desserts I've ever had - especially with the added ice cream on the bottom and condensed milk on top!!

A Rockin Ice has their shave ice dialed in.  I've been to shave ice places that basically give you a snow cone that's all crunchy.  These are the real deal... nice fluffy ice that doesn't fall apart and crumble.

The coffee flavor with condensed milk and the ice cream finish is unbelievable.  The energy drink ones are good too.  They are delicious and offer a nice kick.

    A must try!

A lot of fun for five bucks!  Great taste!  Refreshing and unique.  I only wish they would stay in one place so I could get 2 or 3 a week.  Those that complain about a small scoop of ice cream expect a lot for 50 cents.  I hope this truck makes it big so there's more locations to get such a great treat!
